Ghana Football Society UK has held its maiden awards night in London to honour outstanding players and teams, which excelled in the 2005 football season.
Clubs which received awards at the impressive ceremony included Park View Football Club, newly crowned League Champions and runner-up of the gala tournament, Kennington FC and Soccer Stars, Winners and the Fair play team for the gala tournament respectively.
Shaibu Mohammed of Park View FC also picked up the plague for Best Player award and Nana Baah of Kennington FC received the Top Scorer award.
Mr. Charles Wereko, Counsellor Information at the Ghana High Commission who represented the Ghana High Commissioner at the event, presented the coveted League trophy and gold medals to the League Champions – Park View FC. Kwaku Ofosu Asare, a sports presenter on OBE TV presented the plagues for the individual awards and silver medals to the runner-up while Kwaku Owusu-Frimpong, a member of the Black Supporters Union UK presented the bronze medals to the Fair play team for the gala tournament.
Speaking at the ceremony Mr. Wereko praised the Ghana Football Society UK for successfully staging this year’s season and expressed the hope that the medals donated by the High Commissioner for the awards ceremony would help enhance the competitiveness of the league.
He announced that the High Commissioner would soon launch a “Black Stars Appeal Fund” to mobilise funds to support the Black Stars’ participation in the World Cup finals next summer and urged all Ghanaians living in the UK to donate generously towards the fund.
Mr. Ofosu Asare cautioned Ghanaian football fans interested in travelling to Germany for the World Cup finals to secure their tickets from only accredited organisations.
President of the Ghana Football Society Mr. Peter Nuamah, thanked the High Commissioner for his support and intimated that the Society would continue to work tirelessly to sustained the Ghana football league in the UK.
Charis FC and Millennium FC, Ghanaian football teams based in Barking and Thames Mead, London respectively are poised to join the 6-member League from next season. Other clubs in the League include Republican FC, Deptford Park FC, Soccer Stars FC, Hackney FC, Park View FC and Kennington FC.
