Park View FC (2) v Kennington United (0)

15th April 2007
Kwame Sarpong’s 1st goal in three years proved the decisive winner as Park View banished Kennington United to a 2-goal defeat in the race to top the league table.

Park View, looking to continue their spectacular run of form took no time at all to make their intentions known to the opponent by registering their first goal inside 10 mins by a Charles Allotey close range volley but Kennington slowly began to crawl their way back in to the game after the top scorer in the league became wasteful in a host of chances that befell the prolific striker. Kennington have been touted as Park View’s bogey side in recent years, but Kennington have not won at Downs Lane since the inception of the league and the team from the south side of the river rarely looked like ending Park View’s fantastic form despite a spirited performance.

The ‘snipers’ are well versed in battling in every condition imaginable and it was not long before their passing game clicked into gear. Junior should have extended Park View’s lead within minutes of the first goal when he cracked a tame shot at the opponent’s keeper. KK also brought the best out of the Kennington keeper from close range but, with the Park View boys continuing to misfire in front of goal, Kennington could have scored themselves - Tanko doing well to deny the opponents from close range.

A blistering start to the second half bore further fruit as Kwame netted what turned out to be a much needed reward for the rampant Park View boys. The Park View faithful latched onto Junior’s through-ball, before twisting and turning in the box and then curling into the corner from 5 yards out. Suddenly Park View were cruising, with their pass-and-move game causing Kennington all sorts of problems, and Junior should have extended the lead when he poked wide from 16 yards.

While two goals remained the difference between the sides, the visitors always felt like they had a chance when Park View wasted more chances in the second half. But, despite Kennington’s liveliness upfront, they were struggling to trouble the home defence. KK wasted another glorious chance to seal it in the dying minutes when he strolled through but dithered to take the shot, which enable the opponent defence to clear the ball to safety. There was drama when the ball bounced awkwardly in front of Tanko from a 30 yard shot in the Park View box - prompting frantic appeals from Kennington that the ball had crossed the line- but they were waved away by the eagled eyed referee (Anthony Wills) as Park View sealed a deserved win to stay at the top of the league. The final score Park View FC - 2, Kennington United - 0
